The Houston Health Insurance Market and Rate Overviews
Houston has a glut of choices in buying a health insurance plan for you and your family. To make it simple I will quickly run through each company and give a sample quote for a 34 year old male in Houston. To make it fair, I used the same plan option for all companies in order to make the comparison as close as possible. Due to the fact that most residents of Houston prefer office visit copays and prescription coverage before the deductible I made sure to include that in each plan selection. Additionally I used a $2,500 deductible (or as close as I could get) and a maximum out of pocket per year of $5,500 at most. Some plans will have less.
As usual Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas Plan V comes in the most affordable for me at $140 per month, and would most likely be my first choice. My second choice is a little more difficult due to the fact that HealthNet which is now MHealth Insurance is the next most affordable plan. Unicare is also a subsidiary of WellPoint which you guessed it, owns Blue Cross Blue Shield in many state and thus owns MHealth Insurance and Unicare.
My point is, MHealth seems like it has the best benefits of all the plans as it covers the emergency room and other diagnostics as a copayment which can save someone thousands of dollars in a year. What I am saying is that MHealth might be a good candidate for the best plan in Houston.
Aetna, United, and Humana are all around the same price from $160-$170 per month and pretty much are identical in benefits. However, Aetna is simply the most trusted name in health insurance because they never rescind. WellPoint on the other hand…
Additionally Aetna and AARP are a no brainer if you are over 55, as Aetna underwrites the great AARP product which is without doubt the best plan and the easiest underwriting for this demographic.
