The Oklahoma health insurance market is pretty resoundingly fair when compared to other states. The state risk pool called the Health Insurance High Risk Pool (HIHRP) is available to any Oklahoman that can demonstrate uninsurability.
How do you demonstrate uninsurability? I imagine that a dance contest would be off the table but if you have been declined by two or more health insurance companies or have been quoted a final rate for an individual policy that is more then the Oklahoma high risk pool you should be fine.
Additionally, if you receive a permanent rider excluding a condition or have any serious illness from cancer to HIV you will also qualify. The only downside is that there can be a 12 month preexisting clause when first enrolling in the pool. So don’t think you can go without insurance and get a policy at the last minute. This could literally kill you or your assets which you would have to spend in order to qualify for special assistance like Medicaid. You can reach the HIHRP at 800 933 7624 for more information,or if you think you qualify for Medicaid SCHIP call 800 522 0310.
Now on to the Oklahoma individual health insurance companies. There are five reputable health insurance providers in Oklahoma each offering up 30 plans for individuals which means when shopping for health coverage you will have to decide amongst well over 100 plans from Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Oklahoma, Coventry One (a great company if you haven’t heard), Humana, and United Health One.
Aetna is a national health insurance company who though they can get a little pricey accepts everyone that is of reasonable health. No other company can claim this and this accounts for their higher rates. I always suggest Aetna to the younger Oklahoman’s and to anyone that takes a regular medication for any condition.
Aetna Oklahoma Brochure and Benefit Summary
The great Oklahoma company Blue Cross Blue Shield is the state’s franchise so to speak of the national health carrier Blue Cross Blue Shield Association.
Health Care Service Corporation (HCSC) who owns and operated the Oklahoma subsidiary and also actually owns the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Oklahoma. Each state usually has one BCBS (California and other states have 2) and they are often non profit reliable companies that you can for the most part usually trust with your health care (though don’t be surprised to find the CEO tooling around in a jet).
Blue Cross Blue Shield Health Check of Oklahoma Benefit Summary
I am a big fan of the Coventry One expansion as it heads into other states as their plans are always very benefit rich and they have made a practice of always getting great doctors and hospitals as they expand their company onto the national scene. And for you? Their plans in many demographics are often the price leader, meaning they offer the most health insurance for the least money.

United Health One Oklahoma Health Insurance Benefit Summary
Humana One Portrait Share 80 Oklahoma Benefit Summary
Humana One and United Health One are pretty much the same interchangeable company. Both of them are straight forward PPO’s with no frills and unless they are the price leader in your demographic (you can check by running an instant Oklahoma health insurance quote) you should usually consider other alternatives as they are usually the company that we end up having to switch people every year due to satisfaction and price/premium issues.
Again, if they are the price leader in your zip code and demographic they are usually reliable and United Health One particularly has a large national network and Humana One is gaining ground. Just don’t expect much help until you pass your calendar year deductible.
My Sample Oklahoma Health Insurance Quote
I am a 34 year old male in Oklahoma City for this example, and to be fair I used a deductible of either $2500 or $3000 with a maximum out of pocket of $5000 at most. All plans include unlimited office visit copays and prescription coverage with no deductible applied to either.
The Aetna PPO 2500 came in at a whopping $156 but as we said that is because of their lax underwriting standards. The next highest were Humana at $127 and Coventry at $131 but the Coventry plan for $131 has no coinsurance which makes it the clear winner of the first 3 choices. The next one was United Health One with their Copay Select of Oklahoma which is underwhelming at $118.
So that leaves our winner the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Oklahoma plan which is a mere $108 per month and kicks some butt in this category. That means that for my particular demographic the most health insurance for the least money in Oklahoma City comes from Blue Cross Blue Shield which is the plan I would advise you to buy dependent on mitigating factors of course. That is why the best thing to do is to run your own Oklahoma Health Insurance Quote right now and then call 888 803 5917 for assistance in picking a plan.
