New Mexico Health Insurance Laws and Public Health Plans
In New Mexico the state risk pool called the New Mexico Medical Insurance Pool (NMMIP) is available for HIPAA eligible individuals and families who have been declined by individual health insurance companies or offered rated up health insurance premiums that are higher then the NMMIP. Proof is required to be accepted. There is also another family plan for families called the New Mexico Health Insurance Alliance. The NMHIA offers plans for small employers (in the 2-50 range) and self employed individuals purchasing family plans.
Why all these options? Its because the New Mexico health insurance companies are allowed to decline an individual health insurance applicant based on health conditions. Additionally, they are allowed to place permanent riders on pre-existing conditions (which would also be a qualifier for the NMMIP), and they can even go up to 6 months before covering pre-exiting conditions.
For more on the New Mexico health insurance options from the NMHIA you can call 505 989 1600. The NMMIP on the other side of the coin is administered by a private health insurer, and can be reached at 505 816 4248.
