The Mississippi Health Insurance Market

The Mississippi Health Insurance market is fairly simple to tread through for shoppers due to the fact that there are not that many companies in the state of Mississippi to choose from.  Currently, there are only four East Coast Health Insurance approved companies in the entire state.  If your current health insurance company is not listed here, you should certainly begin comparing other companies right now as we have done impeccable research and our findings conclude that unless you have either Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Mississippi, United Health One, or Humana chances are you are either overpaying or risking your health by going with an untrusted name.

Mississippi State Risk Pool

The state risk pool in Mississippi is called the Mississippi Risk Pool Association (MCHIRPA) which is available to HIPAA eligible individuals, anyone that is of course a resident of Mississippi, and meets the following criteria:

  • Being denied coverage by an insurance company within the previous year
  • Uninsurable with a condition such as AIDS, cancer, diabetes.
  • Accepted for coverage with a permanent rider on a particular condition
  • Accepted for coverage at a rate higher then the state risk pool
  • Previously had coverage with another state risk pool
  • If your coverage isn’t continuous and you are applying for the risk pool there is a 6 month pre-existing clause.

Mississippi residents are actually lucky to have a state risk pool as many states do not offer this benefit which forces other state residents to go without health coverage in many cases.

Mississippi Health Insurance Protection Laws

Mississippi health insurance carriers are allowed to reject individuals for coverage which means that for now Mississippi is not a guarantee issue state like Massachusetts.  However, health insurance are not allowed to enforce pre-existing periods of longer then 12 months.

The state of Mississippi also offers a state continuation of coverage for groups with fewer than 20 employees for up to 12 months of coverage.  The caveat is that individuals must have been active under the previous plan for at least 3 months.

Mississippi Health Insurance Companies

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Mississippi

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Mississippi has two distinct health insurance plans for individuals the copay plans and the coinsurance plans.  The copay offer a copayment for many health care procedures before the deductible including office visits and prescriptions.  The coinsurance plans apply your deductible and coinsurance to nearly 100% of health care procedures.

Blue Cross in Mississippi also offers outstanding preventative programs including their smoke free campaign and their cholesterol monitoring for individuals and families.  But what you want to know about is the price.  Their $2500 deductible plan with office visits and prescriptions is pricier then their competitors but overall offers more benefits.  For a 34 year old male in the Jackson health insurance market the Blue Care plan is $168.

Aetna in Mississippi

Aetna Mississippi Health Insurance Plans

The Aetna plan has the distinction of being the most expensive plan in the Mississippi health insurance market.  However, they are very respected and have never rescinded a policy on us anywhere period, which is unfortunately a important factor.  Unfortunately because a person that pays their premiums religiously should not have to worry about their policy being canceled.

Their plan with a $2500 deductible is a whopping $182 per month.

Humana One and United Health One – Mississippi

Humana One Mississippi Health Insurance PlansUnited Health Care Mississippi

United Health One and Humana One are very similar plans and in the State of Mississippi they are the two companies that usually come out the most affordable.  But, that doesn’t mean that they are necessarily the companies that you should purchase, especially since United Health Care is not a domiciled health insurance company.

In my Jackson health insurance quote example, United and Humana both came in at around $137 each.  Because that means they are cheaper then Blue Cross by about 15% or $40 a month for a single male.  For a larger family in Jackson the difference could be much more significant so for that reason in the city of Jackson we are recommending the Humana One plan because they are domiciled in Mississippi and are the price leader in the state.
