If you live in Arizona, your choice of health plans on the health insurance exchange set up by the Affordable Care Act will vary by region. With a selection of ten insurers statewide, you may be able to choose from 3-5 carriers per region.
What is the Exchange?
If you don’t have health insurance and you qualify for tax credits, you can apply for coverage and walk away paying a fraction of the cost.
Depending on your income, that fraction could be larger or smaller, but you still get a discount. And who doesn’t like that?
Subsidies reduce your monthly premium (the cost of staying covered), and cost-sharing (the price of medical services approved by your plan) if you earn on the lower end of the subsidy-eligible pool.
Any reasons not to consider the marketplace?
If you have serious health problems, are already insured, or your income is over the subsidy-eligible limit (about $45,900 per year for one person in 2013), the exchange might not be for you. That said, you still have coverage options, and that might include the Arizona exchange in a pinch.
These plans may not be optimal for people with chronic illnesses as they keep overall costs down by offering smaller networks. If you’re on the healthy side, this likely won’t affect you.
Keep in mind that everyone can purchase individual coverage on or off the exchange, regardless of health status or other factors. All plans are guaranteed issue, so insurers can’t turn you down.
