The Detroit Health Insurance Market
So in order to find the most affordable health plans in Detroit, I ran several sample Detroit health insurance quotes. Using myself as the guinea pig (a beautiful 34 year old male specimen) I found that the most affordable health insurance plan in Detroit is United Health One and the new Solo health plan. Both came in at $115, however the Solo plan has less out of pocket exposure per year then the United Health One plan by about $2000. The United Health One (or Golden Rule) plan is called the Copay Select 2500 and has a deductible of $2,500 and a maximum out of pocket of $5,500. The Solo plan has a deductible of $3,000 with $0 coinsurance and copayments which mean it will save you $2,500 if you experience any claims.
Humana One came in at $127 and their comparable plan in the Portrait 2500, with a deductible of $2,500 and a maximum out of pocket of $4,500. Still for the extra $15, unless you know you are going to have claims I would stick with Solo or United Health One.
Aetna is too expensive for young males in Detroit, but they are very affordable for females and older residents. They also offer AARP plans in Detroit, which are by far the best value if you are over 55.
Finally there is Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan which offers limited choices in Detroit, and their plans are pretty stripped down benefit wise. To see what I mean run a Detroit Blue Cross Blue Shield quote here.
