Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana is an independent licensee of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association, operating as the sole company in Louisiana that caters to the state exclusively. Founded in 1934 in New Orleans, BCBSLA was the state’s first health insurance company, and therefore the largest. Formed from a small, nonprofit mutual insurer offering prepaid hospital plans, the organization grew quickly into other cities and was approved as a Blue Cross plan by 1948 in Baton Rouge. Twenty years later, the separate local companies in Baton Rouge and New Orleans merged to become BCBSLA.
As a nonprofit, they are committed to creating a healthier Louisiana, offering the largest selection of wellness programs in the state. In recent years, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Louisiana has been active in helping the community recover from devastating hurricanes and the BP oil spill. The organization also operates the BCBSLA Foundation, which supports and funds efforts to further the wellness and well-being of Louisiana residents through various health and education projects.
Individual plans from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana are mostly offered through a PPO network, with the ability to choose a plan with copays, a high deductible, a basic level of coverage, or a health savings account. They also offer a POS option for those who want more copays and the coordinated structure of an HMO with more provider choices. BCBSLA’s HMO plans, PPO network, and case management are accredited with URAC, and the company has received an “A” (Strong) rating from Standard & Poor’s.
BCBSLA Individual Plans
For those who want the most benefits for a copay, these plans offer a range of deductibles to find the perfect balance of costs. Instantly receive access to doctor’s office visits and prescription drugs (some plans available without a separate deductible) for a copay, and receive preventive services for free. When your deductible is met, an array of medical services such as hospital care, surgery, and emergency services are covered at either 70 or 80 percent. Pair your plan with a variety of supplemental benefits, including maternity.
To save on monthly premiums while still being able to access a broad selection of medical services, a high deductible plan is a good solution. The out-of-pocket limit includes the deductible, which means you get 100 percent coverage on all services when it is reached. Physician, pharmacy, and hospital services are all included in the deductible, while preventive care is free and available at any time regardless of your deductible. These plans are qualified for use with a health savings account, though it is not a requirement to open one.
A combination of upfront benefits and limited major medical services, these plans have a wide range of deductibles – from $500 to $5,000. Use the Louisiana PPO network to receive lower rates on hospital stays, surgery, and inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation, and of course, no cost for preventive care. Though these are the most basic plans offered by BCBSLA, BlueSelect plans still cover prescriptions with a separate deductible, and generics for a copay. BlueValue plans offer basic hospital coverage with no physician visits and limited prescriptions. All basic plans have 80 percent in-network coverage after deductible.
Point of Service (POS) Plans
Administered by BCBSLA subsidiary HMO Louisiana, five different plans offer affordable coverage through local networks in the Baton Rouge, New Orleans and Shreveport regions. Several plans have no deductible, with the convenience of all services for a copay. All plans cover primary care physician visits for a $30-35 copay, and emergency visits at $150. The deductible option also includes several services for a copay, as well as inpatient and outpatient visits for 100 percent after deductible. For members of these cities, the POS plan is one of the most cost saving options possible.
