The maternity benefit can only come into effect if the optional benefit is effective on the policy 30 days prior to conception. If you were pregnant, no medically underwritten plan would be able to offer you coverage since the pregnancy would be considered a declinable pre-existing condition. If you had insurance and then got pregnant before the maternity optional benefit was effective then the routine maternity care would not be covered, but any complications (God forbid) would be covered as a medical benefit under the terms outlined in your regular medical policy. So for instance, if you had BCBSF or any other insurance plan for that matter, and were to become pregnant without having a maternity benefit I would say that’s at least way better than not having insurance at all. Besides the obvious reasons that you would be covered for any medical condition besides the routine maternity care and also for the most expensive parts of maternity care – that is, any complications such as a c-section.
I hope I answered your questions without too much rambling and I would say yes, the two best options are those considering that you want to maintain a low premium. Plans 504 and 596 as well as 597 are great plans but have less deductibles, thus would have higher premiums. But if you’re alright having a higher deductible and still have robust benefits as well as a maternity benefit that kicks in fairly quickly (30 days prior to conception minimum period that the optional benefit needs to be in effect and also have Baptist Hospital and Dr. Del Boca on the plan, then yes those two are the best options. Otherwise, if you were alright going to Jackson North or one of the other providers on the Miami Dade Blue network, then I would say Miami Dade Blue is the most economical choice especially for maternity coverage – same maternity benefit as the Blue Options plan but different network.
