After my office manager’s husband came down with swine flu on Friday, my wife on Saturday fell ill as well. As we have a friend in the Miami Jackson Hospital System, we were recently able to find out that they are isolating patients and seem to be hiding this fact from the public at large. We have not been able to find any news on the subject and our source in the Miami Jackson Hospital claims that there were multiple deaths mostly of young people from the outbreak. We are waiting to hear more facts and get more confirmations. In the meantime we will leave you with this cute picture.
Swine Flu Update: 10/6/09
Everyone is better! My office managers husband ran a pretty high fever for a couple of days but was back at work right away. My wife was only sick for a day but she is partly bionic. The rest of her is actually made from bits of steel and plastic. I would mention the rest of her chemical make-up but you wouldn’t believe me. It seems that the Swine Flu is not that bad.
For instance between swine flu and living in Detroit, I pick swine flu. How about swine flu or a bad breakup? Swine flu again.
Here is a good one, would I rather have swine flu or sit through a Blue Cross Blue Shield agent meeting?
If you answered swine flu you would be right.
General Information on Swine Flu
H1N1 Swine Flu is a new influenza virus causing illness in people. This new virus was first detected in people in the United States in April 2009. This virus is spreading from person-to-person worldwide, probably in much the same way that regular seasonal influenza viruses spread. On June 11, 2009, the World Health Organization (WHO) signaled that a pandemic of H1N1 Swine Flu was underway. (definition from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention).
There are currently H1N1 Swine Flu cases circulating in Florida. In late June and early July over 90% of the specimens tested for influenza at the Bureau of Laboratories have been positive for H1N1 (Swine) Influenza. At this point in time it can be assumed that a person with influenza-like illness has the H1N1 strain, without conducting laboratory testing.

Swine Flu Update 10/24 President Declares Pigs To Be White House Press Secretary
WASHINGTON (AP) – President Barack Obama declared the swine flu outbreak a national emergency and empowered his health secretary to suspend federal requirements and speed treatment for thousands of infected people.
The declaration that Obama signed late Friday authorized Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius to bypass federal rules so health officials can respond more quickly to the outbreak, which has killed more than 1,000 people in the United States.
The goal is to remove bureaucratic roadblocks and make it easier for sick people to seek treatment and medical providers to provide it immediately. That could mean fewer hurdles involving Medicare, Medicaid or health privacy regulations.
“As a nation, we have prepared at all levels of government, and as individuals and communities, taking unprecedented steps to counter the emerging pandemic,” Obama wrote in the declaration, which the White House announced Saturday.
He said the pandemic keeps evolving, the rates of illness are rising rapidly in many areas and there’s a potential “to overburden health care resources.”
Because of vaccine production delays, the government has backed off initial, optimistic estimates that as many as 120 million doses would be available by mid-October. As of Wednesday, only 11 million doses had been shipped to health departments, doctor’s offices and other providers, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention officials said.
The government now hopes to have about 50 million doses of swine flu vaccine out by mid-November and 150 million in December.
The flu virus has to be grown in chicken eggs, and the yield hasn’t been as high as was initially hoped, officials explained.
Swine flu is more widespread now than it’s ever been. Health authorities say almost 100 children have died from the flu, known as H1N1, and 46 states now have widespread flu activity.
Worldwide, more than 5,000 people have reportedly died from swine flu since it emerged this year and developed into a global epidemic, the World Health Organization said Friday. Since most countries have stopped counting individual swine flu cases, the figure is considered an underestimate.
