KidsCare – Arizona’s Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP)

Children up to age 18 in Arizona with low to moderate income may be eligible for Arizona KidsCare if their income is above the AHCCCS guidelines. The state’s CHIP program, KidsCare was eliminated in March 2010 due to lack of funding, leaving thousands of needy children without coverage until May 2012 when the KidsCare II, a temporary CHIP, was made available. This plan is open to “a limited number of children,” according to the government site, and will close enrollment on December 21, 2013.

In order to qualify for KidsCare II in this small window of time through a long wait list, you must meet one of the following criteria:

  • Arizona resident
  • 18 years of age or younger
  • U.S. citizen or legal resident
  • Has a Social Security number or is willing to apply for one (to apply, visit the U.S. Social Security Administration)
  • Income at or below 175 percent of FPL
  • Currently uninsured without access to other coverage
  • Not eligible for AHCCCS Medicaid
  • Not eligible for coverage through a state agency employee
  • Willing to pay a premium for coverage
  • Aging out of SOBRA Medicaid and have family income between 100 and 175 percent of the poverty line
  • Currently pending approval for KidsCare and has received a notice to apply for KidsCare II

Income Guidelines

Based on how many people live in your household and how much you earn, you may be able to qualify for KidsCare II. The program will not accept individuals with income lower than 150 percent of poverty, which changes every April 1, as they may qualify for AHCCCS with that amount. In order to qualify for KidsCare or KidsCare II, your income must fall between the Medicaid limits for the child’s age group and 175 percent FPL.
